How can restaurants collect customer data without violating the DPDP Act?

30 views 0

Restaurants often collect a customer's mobile number or email for order updates, loyalty programs, or marketing. Under the DPDP Act, customers should be informed about why their personal data is being collected before they share it.

There are two practical ways to do this:

Self-service kiosk or tablet: Let customers enter their own mobile number or email on a customer-facing screen that clearly explains the purpose of data collection. This ensures the customer is informed at the point of collection, and their consent is captured at the same time.

Printed privacy notice: If a self-service screen isn't available, display a privacy notice at the counter explaining why the data is being collected and how long it will be retained before staff ask for the customer's details.
