Yes. AI coding tools such as Claude and Cursor can be used securely with Shopify, provided they are connected using identity-based authentication and least-privilege access controls. The security risk comes from how access is configured — not from the AI tool itself.
The risk does not come from using Claude or Cursor alone. Problems usually arise when the tool is connected using a shared admin account, a permanent API key, or permissions that cover the entire Shopify store.
Before connecting an AI coding tool, check that:
- The developer signs in using their own identity.
- Access is limited to the resources needed for the project.
- Read and write permissions are assigned separately.
- Requests are logged.
- Access can be removed when it is no longer required.
