Why are macro-enabled files (.xltm) not opening in SharePoint preview or WordPress?

10 views 1

Macro enabled files such as .xltm are not supported for browser preview in SharePoint or Office for the web. Since these files can contain executable macros, Microsoft restricts them from opening directly in the browser for security reasons.

If these files are accessed through a WordPress SharePoint integration, this behavior is still controlled by Microsoft and not by our plugin.

How to check if this is expected behavior

To confirm that this limitation is from Microsoft's side, follow these steps:

  • Open the same .xltm file directly in SharePoint outside of WordPress.
  • Check whether the file previews in the browser.
  • If the file does not preview there as well, the limitation is from SharePoint or Office for the web.

Workarounds

You can use the following alternatives to access macro enabled files:

  • Download the file and open it using the desktop version of Microsoft Excel.
  • Convert the file to a non macro format such as .xlsx if macros are not required.
  • Open the file using the Microsoft Excel desktop application for full functionality.

For more details on supported file types and preview limitations, refer to Microsoft documentation for SharePoint and Office for the web.
